Build Resumes Online For Effective Job Hunting

By Linda Brooks

Marketing oneself for a job search is no longer a mundane task, as employers are looking for cover letters that are enticing and details that would be an asset to their organization. It also helps to take note of the format each resume has while ensuring that the most valuable information is visible at first sight. Even though some veteran job seekers may be accustomed to tradition, when they build resumes online, there are usually templates and tips that can assist with creating different formats.

What job applicants of today must realize is that electronic media can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. In the case of someone in the position of hiring someone to fill an opening, they may receive hundred of resumes in a single day. They have to filter out the right candidates as quickly as possible and going for the most attractive is the practical solution.

Anyone who works entry level job may wonder how branding would apply to them but even this position can use electronic media to an advantage. Marketing is made up of four Ps. Two of these are presentation and placement. These are also two things that a job applicant needs to assess when sending out an application.

There are some places that encourage including certification badges or proof of completing a course that relates to the position. This can be done easily by inserting an HTML code or link directly from the issuer. Hiring companies like this feature because it takes away the wait time that may come with verifying credentials.

It helps to have more than one style, as well as one for each industry or job title. There are people who may have earned more than one degree or certification but it may not be practical to add everything on one resume. In addition to creating more than one format that may be requested by an employer, it helps to have one that places emphasis on a certain set of skills.

Another reason why it helps to learn about online resumes is keyword placement. If there are industry buzzwords or phrases likely to catch the eye of an employer, these need to be placed near the top of the resume. The reason is that the recipient may receive hundreds of resumes for one position and does not have time to read each one thoroughly. So they look at maybe the first half of the page before deciding whether or not to proceed with an applicant.

Those who are changing careers may want to stick with the Functional style, which emphasizes skills over work history. Electronic cover letters may contain links to articles or publications written that pertain to the position. If a person is looking for useful content, they can still add small things like hobbies or the offering of references.

Many job placement specialists also recommended tailoring a job to meet certain specifications listed on each job advertisement. Once again, it helps to place keywords near the top and rework past experience so that it may relate to the position of interest. Since many resume sites allow users to add more than one, it helps to save these and use a flash drive as a backup.
