Useful Information Regarding Chicago Asbestos

By Jessica Cox

Asbestos refers to one of the mineral substances that occur naturally. Usually, it can be pulled into a fluffy consistency. The mineral has soft and flexible fibers. Although soft and flexible, the fibers offer total resistance against chemical corrosion, electricity, and heat. As such, in its purest form, the mineral is a perfect insulator. Some manufacturers used to make plastics, cement, cloth, paper and other materials by mixing this material into them. This is worth knowing about Chicago Asbestos.

It is used in various applications due to its resistance ability to corrosion and insulation properties. It is also used in construction industry. This product has also been deemed harmful to humans and in most countries it is a banned substance.

Ironically, in the United States a ban has not been implemented, with any attempts made in that direction countered strongly from business interests. Inclusion of the material in any domestically manufactured product is still legal. One restriction is that the percentage content in a product must not exceed one percent.

These restrictions on the percentage of the substance in any product were put in place some few years ago. This shows that products manufactured before these restrictions were effected or buildings constructed during that time still contain very large amounts of asbestos. There are other countries that the use of the product for industrial and commercial used are legal include China and India.

As stated earlier on, the mineral is a chemical hazard to human health. The mineral forms microscopic fibres in the air that cannot be detected by the naked eye. On the same note, they can neither be smelled nor tasted, making them hard to discover. Once inhaled, they sediment in the body, mostly inside lungs without showing any immediate health effects. Due to this, it is extremely hard to detect if one has inhaled the fibres.

The fibers that are settled in the body do not dissolve so that they can be eliminated from the body system. This makes them very had to expel from the body. Over a period of several years, research has indicated that the fibers eventually start causing scarring and inflammation. They can also cause genetic damage to cells in the body.

Research has also revealed that illnesses relating to inhalation of the mineral take up to 50 years to manifest. With that in mind, most diagnosis results in the US come from exposure that occurred before restrictions on the mineral were enforced. Cases of contamination are expected to come down drastically following the restrictions.

Asbestos is not safe when inhaled or consumed at any level. That means that even the smallest levels of exposure can lead to various conditions. However, exposure to large concentrations of the microscopic fibers poses the greatest threat. Regular exposure to small amounts also poses a threat. Damage caused at the cellular level does not have any known way of being reversed.
