Details About Ozone Water Treatment Systems

By Anna Thompson

Ozonation as a method of treating water was introduced back in the 18s. Ozone water treatment systems are common in Africa, Europe and Asia. The United States has since switched to other methods, although they still use it. It is one of the most effective and best water treatment technique that has ever been invented. This technique accounts for the safe and good taste of bottled water.

Most businesses venturing in water packaging as the beginning were almost forced out business. The main cause was improper treatment of water. Invention of ozonation rescued most of them and saw them succeed. High quality water is produced when the disinfection process in followed accordingly.

Before invention and application of this method bottlers applied other techniques that later proved to be infective and unreliable. The bottling system was in its infancy and in need of a lot of improvements. The sealing of bottled water was not done properly. Airborne organisms and air could always enter bottles during squeezing and handling. This meant that microorganisms could always grow after several days of storage. Resulting in odor, bad taste and health problems to consumers.

Artificial manufacture of ozone is possible in an electric discharge generator with oxygen as the main material. The efficiency of most generators has been improved from the 2 percent weight to about 10 percent weight that is in the feed gas stream. The process is such that at the ozone contractor the water is brought into contact with ozone gas stream. In the contractor the gas dissolves in the water while undissolved gas is decomposed in a decomposer before being released into the air.

Excess ozone is decomposed to avoid pollution. This is done in accordance with World Health Organization regulations which regulate the quantity of ozone gas left to escape into the atmosphere. Presently concentration numbers are under 0.1 milligrams per liter. The good oxidation and disinfection abilities of ozone make it the most preferred. Most municipal water supply and treatment plants are currently using this method.

There are several reasons as to why reactors are required in ozonation. Reactors provide the actual facility where various reactions happen. Basic reactions such as decomposition, oxidation, and disinfection take place in reactors where they are exposed to various agents for a specific period. Disinfection mainly involves killing viruses, bacteria, and other parasites in water. A good percentage of disease causing agents are killed during disinfection.

Disinfection extends to all bottles including reusable ones. Oxidation which involves the addition of ozone gas is efficient against organic materials that cause odor and taste. It is equally effective against sulfide, iron, and manganese ions. Most treatment objectives can be achieved leaving no traces of chemical residual or taste when applied appropriately.

In conclusion, ozonation is approved for use because disadvantages are little while the benefits are more. Considering this most states in the world have authorized water treating and supply facilities to use it. The permission is granted and extends to storage, treatment, and processing of foods stuffs in some countries. Scientists are still investigating the possibility of ozone ions reaction with bromide ions to cause bromated ions that are otherwise known to be carcinogenic.
