How To Do Wet Tapping

By Sarah Wallace

This is a service that has been used for diversion of water without disruption of the main channel. This is done using a drilling machine that cuts a hole into an in-service. The cutting is done in a tank, pipe or any vessel that is pressurized. The main aim is to cause a diversion from the main channel without losing the product. This process is known as wet tapping.

This is the most practical procedure for connecting a pipe to an already existing channel. Sleeves are needed for the tapping of a channel. The valve is attached to the sleeve in the procedure. After that has been done, the machine used to do the cutting is joined to the valve. The machine extends beyond the valve via an extendable crank. With this setup, the machine goes past the sleeve.

The essential part to do the final job is the cutter and drill bit. Both are connected to the beam. The cutter engraves the conduit to make the place of diversion to the new pipe. While doing this, the material that is separated is lifted out using a technically built mechanism in the drill bit. This helps remove the unwanted material safely from the system. The valve closes as the machine is detached. This is when all the steps are followed accordingly. Chances of the reverse occurring can be anticipated.

Workers who have limited experience in drilling and working on material that is not recommended for the procedure are the major reasons for failure. However, the most common reason is using material that is incompatible with the given technique. In order to change the probability of the latter occurring, hiring the same technician is the best option especially for bigger conduits.

Wet taps are commonly done in commercial and residential areas. They allow tie-ins to the existing system. This can be done either for permanent or temporary basis. These are for the line plugging stage. They allow customers to transform, maintain or even repair the pressurized systems. This is by enabling minimal interruption of the system using this service.

A good number of materials used for piping cannot be tapped. The materials that allow this procedure are made from carbon steel, ductile iron and cast iron. The other materials cannot be welded. This gives a reason for an additional procedure to be used in order to make a diversion. A bolt-on fitting perfectly solves this hitch. The fittings will, therefore, be used to make the diversion.

There are a number of products that require the procedure. This can be done on pipes that carry liquid products. These products include water and sewage. The procedure needs to be very accurate so as not to lose the product in the process of diversion. It is usually carried out in residential and commercial areas. With considerations on the areas it is carried out, care should be taken not to flood or pollute the environment.

The main advantage of the procedure is that there are no volatile materials being transported in the pipes. In the case of an accident, the damage is limited. A machine referred to as Hydro-tapper is flexible and offers above standard performance on pipes with a range of diameters. It has an inbuilt hydraulic drive.
