The Ins And Outs Of Ductless Systems

By Jason Bailey

Over the years, HVAC systems have remained relatively the same. What may have changed is the way they are controlled. Newer materials are also used nowadays, and this has improved their efficiency and cost. The thermostats used today are programmable, which means modern systems can be switched on and off automatically based on user preferences. Ductless systems have become increasingly popular over the years for a number of reasons.

It is much cheaper to buy and install a heating or cooling system that does not have air ducts. For the system to work efficiently, however, every room in the building must have a heat source. Alternatively, powerful fans must be used to circulate air around the building.

A duct-free cooling system, also known as a split AC system, has two components, the air handler and condenser. The former is installed inside the room on the wall or ceiling while the latter is installed outdoors, either on the roof, outer wall or on the ground. These components are connected by refrigerant tubing and electrical wires.

When compressed air is allowed to expand, it absorbs heat from the surroundings. When it is compressed, it releases heat to the surroundings. That is how cooling systems work.

There are generally two types of duct free heating; electric heaters and hydronic heaters. The former simply converts electrical energy into heat energy. This happens when electric current runs through a high resistance element.

A hydronic heating system uses steam or hot water to heat a space. The main components of the system are; the boiler, plumbing, radiators, baseboard heaters and control system. The boiler super heats water and sends it to the plumbing system, which distributes the hot water or steam to radiators and baseboard heaters located in different parts of the building. These heat exchangers extract heat from water and radiates it into the surroundings. This raises the temperature of the surrounding air. The thermostat is responsible for comparing the temperature of the room with the preferred temperature. If temperatures are too high, the thermostat sends a signal to the control system to close valves, thereby stopping any further heating.

Window mounted air conditioners are also duct free because they do not have any type of ductwork. They are usually mounted on the window frame. The condenser unit is exposed to the outside while the air handler has contact with indoor air.

You can choose to install any type of HVAC system in your home or business premise. What is important is that you hire an experienced installer who is both experienced and certified to do the job. The installer should also offer a maintenance contract and be able to maintain your system in good operating condition. As times goes by, you may want to start planning to replace the system. This is because old appliances consume too much power, perform poorly, are inefficient and break down too often. You can make your life much easier and comfortable by replacing old machines.
