The Basic Facts Concerning Conveyors

By Dorothy Gray

A conveyor is a mechanical system used to move materials from place to place in a wide variety of settings. These systems become even more useful when the materials being moved are bulky and heavy. Conveyors are particularly useful in material handling and packaging industries because they offer an efficient and fast way of moving different materials in a company.

The use of conveyor systems is not a new concept in most industries. The systems have been adopted in many industries because of their advantages. The first advantage of the systems is that they provide safe transport for materials which would otherwise be too expensive and strenuous when done by people. Thus, companies install them to save on costs and to improve the efficiency and safety involved in moving materials around the company.

Secondly, these devices incorporate a lot of flexibility so that they can be installed anywhere. Modern technology allows for production of systems that can be used in various settings and environments. Similarly, the designs of the devices allow for transportation of loads of different shapes, sizes, and weights. Therefore, loads of different characteristics can be moved using these systems without much trouble.

Lastly, modern conveyor systems are designed in a way as to ensure the safety of the operator and material. They include several safety features that can be exploited by the user to guarantee safe operation over the life time of the machine. There are also various options available for running conveying systems. Such options include fully automated, mechanical, and hydraulic systems. Most of them are also customized to suit individual needs.

Many industries have adopted conveyor systems. However, some industries adopted the system many years before other did. Among the industries that use the devices are bottling, aerospace, pharmaceutical, food processing, agriculture, electronic, automotive, print fishing, canning, packaging, and chemical. Their use in these industries is in moving various materials including automotive components, furniture, grain, nuts, wood, pills, scrap, metal, powder, cans, animal feeds, and bottles.

The adoption of these systems is still growing although they have been in use for long. Thus, they are being bought and used more. The construction sector and other industries that previously did not use the product are now employing them. There is a growing demand in Europe, North America, and Asia. Chain conveyor, line shaft roller conveyor, and conveyor belt are some of the most bought conveyor systems.

Conveyor devices are of many types today. Some of the major ones are gravity, bucket, flexible, plastic belt, pneumatic, chain, gravity skatewheel, lineshaft roller, screw, overland, dust proof, drag, spiral, vertical, and overhead conveyor systems. Material to be handled is one of the major factors that influence choice. Other variables include material, size, and capacity.

The price is one of the variables that need to be considered when considering buying these devices. Price depends on factors such as material of construction, manufacturer, place of origin, application, and size among others. One should do price comparisons before settling for a specific product.
