How Will Your Healthcare Billing Be In 2016?

By Wanda Rodriguez

When ICD-10 got released, it caused a panic amongst healthcare providers. Many doctors were scrambling to find certified coders. It was not easy to find these coders because a lot of medical billers in the industry did not prepare for the drastic changes. Many coders thought that the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10 was going to be a breeze. However, they now see how wrong they were. The codes are complex and often hard to figure out. A person must come to the realization that they can get better with practice, education and experience.

Years ago, doctors would almost always have a six figure salary. Now a days, some medical doctors in the USA are seeing their salary at about $75,000 to $85,000 a year. This is a big change since 2008. We now have healthcare that doesn't work for a lot of doctors. The reason is because many insurance companies want to payout far less than what the treatment is worth. Doctors today are asking themselves, "Should I choose a different career path?"

Today, doctors feel like they are being bossed around by the insurance companies. Even though they have a PhD and went through 8 + years of school and residency, it doesn't matter. They are often being told that if they give treatment that is not medically necessary, they will not get paid on the service. This can be devastating for doctors that want to have their own practice. Many doctors don't want to feel like they are in a losing battle. Many want to believe that their training was meant to help patients.

If you think that you can juggle everything at one time, you are sadly mistaken. Today, billers have to learn how to do things appropriately. In time, you will be able to see for yourself that things start coming together more naturally. It often takes lots of hard work for people to see changes happening for the better in their healthcare establishment. If you are like me, you probably want to see yourself as a success. A lot of doctors are not feeling that way right now.

Coding today may seem like an unfair system. However, it is not unfair when you look at all the facts. For starters, you are getting what you pay for. With education, experience and certification, there seems to be a lot of coding success. Without it, your practice suffers. If you cannot find a qualified ICD-10 coder, then it is best to outsource your billing. Many doctors are beginning to discover this now.
