Asphalt should be used when it is still hot since it is existent in liquid form at a specific temperature. The liquid binder can easily get poured out and spread when it is hot. After being poured out, it is rolled and finally compacted to form a durable smooth surface. Asphalt normally moves if it is exposed to a heavy luggage hence it is viewed as flexible pavement.

However, if the material is properly designed, it should be able to rebound to its original shape when the load is removed. However, its ability to rebound to its original shape usually depends on how long it is subjected to the load. If the load remains in place for too long, asphalt may not be able to regain its original shape. The material is also considered to be viscoelastic in that it is both elastic and viscous at the same time.

Drainage, load support, and smoothness are the three main reasons behind building of pavements using asphalt. Bitumen is normally stiff and if crushed rock is mixed with it, its stiffness increases. Because of this, it aids other materials used in road construction to have the ability to resist loads better. When roads are made using asphalt, they can withstand pressure from loads without being much deformed.

Secondly, asphalt offers a good level of water impermeability. As such, it can help to effectively drain any surface water that falls on it. However, good geometric design must also be incorporated into the pavement to achieve better drainage. Lastly, smoothness that pavement material offers enhances comfort and reduces vehicle operation costs.
